BCAS, CAB and PROKAS have signed MOU on Food Safety Governance

Farm to nutrition desk:Two partnering organizations and PROKAS, a project of British Council in Dhaka have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today on Food Safety Governance.

Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies (BCAS), Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) and PROKAS have signed the MOU to cooperate on need based scientific research, knowledge and evidence generation, capacity building of actors and stakeholders as well as to organize informed campaign for food safety, good governance, consumer’s right  and public health issues in Bangladesh.

The signing ceremony was held at the PROKAS office in Baridhara, Dhaka. It was attended by Mr. Ghulam Rahman, President of CAB, Dr. Atiq Rahman, Executive Director of BCAS and Mr. Gerry Fox, Team Leader of PROKAS (Promoting Knowledge for Accountable Systems) and the relevant officials of the organizations. It is expected that the collaboration among the IBP partners of the British Council will influence the government policy and sectoral actors including the private sector and regulatory authority for improving accountability and responsibility of actors and stakeholders and thus contributes to food safety governance in Bangladesh.

Mr. Gerry Fox of PROKAS hoped that the collective actions of the IBP partners will contribute to improving food safety situation and health of the common people in Bangladesh. Mr. Ghulam Rahman of CAB said that the wider experiences and institutional capacity of BCAS and CAB would strengthen the process to initiate informed campaigns on safe food and consumer’s right issues with scientific evidence for improving accountability and responsibilities of all actors and stakeholders.

Dr. Atiq Rahman, a renowned climate scientist and Executive Director of BCAS felt that food safety is a major and emerging health concern in Bangladesh. There is great need for scientific research on quality of foods and safe food as well as advocacy and campaign for improving public health through food safety governance in Bangladesh.-Press Release
