"Food and Nutrition Security" - a short course for professionals

agrilife24.com:Why a course on Food and Nutrition Security? Despite the increase of food availability, globally there are still around 795 million people undernourished.  

Bangladesh has made good progress on reducing undernourishment. Despite this effort, 36% of the children under 5 years of age are stunted and anaemia is highly prevalent, with 40% of women of reproductive age affected. There is substantial evidence that malnutrition has life-long negative impacts on learning capacity, productivity and income-generating potential of the population.  

Although agriculture plays a key role in assuring food security, increased agricultural production does not automatically lead to better nourished populations. For a true impact on improved nutritional status of households in Bangladesh, an integrated approach is needed linking food availability and access with consumption of nutritious food. Hence, ICF, BAU and Wageningen University & Research have co-developed a practical training course for mid-career professionals on how to deliver stronger impact of Food and Nutrition Security programs and projects.  

Why does a reduction in poverty not automatically result in improved nutritional status? Can agricultural development help reduce under nutrition? If so, how should programs be designed to make them more nutrition sensitive?  These are the key issues covered in this course.

Course objectives

- To understand the concepts of food security, nutrition, poverty and their interrelation in the context of Bangladesh.
- To be able to apply a broad range of tools to analyze Food and Nutrition Security situation;
- To design, adjust and implement food and nutrition security (including nutrition-sensitive agriculture) programs or projects to enhance the impact on nutrition;
- To improve monitoring and evaluation of nutrition sensitive agriculture programs or projects

Target groups

This training is targeted at mid-career professionals involved in Food Security initiatives in Bangladesh. In particular, the following groups are encouraged to apply:

- Professionals working at a local, national or international NGO  
- Practitioners and managers of Community Based Organizations
- Academic researchers and University staff with a background in the field of food science, rural development, extension, agriculture, livestock, fisheries, agri-business, nutrition and health
- Private companies working in food security (including food distribution, processing, marketing and quality control)
- Policy makers and public sector dealing with food procurement and distribution  
Applicants must hold at least a BSc degree or higher and have relevant work experience.

Course contents  

- Key concepts of Food and Nutrition Security
- Food systems from farm to fork, including food availability, access, utilization and stability
- Nutrition Sensitive Agriculture
- Current status of nutrition situation in Bangladesh
- Situation analysis, stakeholder analysis  
- Nutrition Interventions (specific and sensitive)
- Project/program design
- Monitoring and evaluation  
- Field visit to experience on dietary diversity   

You will leave this 5 days course with a tangible action plan to support you and your organization to deliver impact of food and nutrition security programs or projects and/or to make your agricultural interventions nutrition sensitive.  

Course methods

The course consists of highly participatory training methods, including case studies, group works, field work, exercises to apply tools and skills, and some plenary lectures.   

The training approach is interactive, experience, as well as evidence-based. Transfer of knowledge will go handin-hand with working in small groups and/or individually on case studies.  

The course will be co-facilitated by experts from Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Wageningen University & Research, The Netherlands and other resource persons.
