The event was organized by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) and the Centre of Excellence for South-South Cooperation in Agriculture (ISSCA). The award was presented in recognition of BARI’s innovative variety, "BARI Chinabadam-9" (a Bangladeshi groundnut variety).
BARI Chinabadam-9 was selected from among competitive nominations across the Global South (developing nations) for its role in improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. Capable of withstanding adverse environmental conditions, this local variety has made significant contributions to boosting agricultural productivity, strengthening food security, and enhancing climate resilience for farmers in dryland regions. The ISSCA Global Awards recognize proven agricultural innovations that offer potential for widespread adoption and application in other countries. As a science-based crop development achievement, BARI Chinabadam-9 directly empowers marginalized farming communities facing climate and soil-related challenges. BARI Director General Dr. Md. Manjurul Kadir stated, "This award symbolizes the excellence of our research.
