Mohammad Riaz, BAU:Female students are performing better than male students in academic results across different years of the six faculties at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU). They also hold the highest number of positions among the top 10 students based on academic performance.

Teachers and researchers say regular class attendance, timely completion of assignments, concentration, proper planning and time management are some of the main reasons behind the good results of female students.

They also say female students generally spend more time on their studies, use social media less and spend less time in unnecessary gatherings. Their habit of completing daily lessons regularly also helps them perform better in examinations.

Alvia Hossain Mim, a high-performing student of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at BAU, said good academic results are very important for women considering their need for secure jobs and their families' expectations. In a male-dominated society, women need to study well to become independent. Girls are often more competitive than boys. So, they study regularly, attend classes attentively, prepare notes and start preparing for examinations early. These are some of the main reasons for their good results.

She added that On the other hand one reason for the poor academic performance of some male students is that they spend more time on social activities instead of giving priority to their studies.

Prof Dr Md Wakilur Rahman, a member of the Bangladesh Accreditation Council, said better residential hall facilities and good relations with family members are among the reasons for the good academic performance of female students at BAU.

He said not all jobs are equally safe for women in the present situation. As merit is given more importance in relatively secure jobs, female students are becoming more focused on their studies.

He also said many female students who fail to achieve good results in secondary and higher secondary education face family pressure or restrictions on continuing their studies. As a result, they have little alternative but to perform well academically if they want to continue their education and build a better future.

Prof Dr. Wakilur Rahman also said former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia played an important role in promoting women's education through scholarships and various initiatives.
