Mohammad Riaz, BAU:The University Grants Commission (UGC) held a meeting with vice-chancellors to discuss introducing third-language courses at 26 public universities, including Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU).

The BAU Public Relations and Publications Office disclosed the information on Wednesday (September 30).

The meeting discussed establishing language centres at public universities, mapping existing capacities and resources, and informing the UGC promptly about the required manpower. Participants stressed the need to consider regional demand when selecting third languages. They also said that it would not be necessary to introduce the same language at all universities.

At the meeting, UGC member Prof Dr Abdullah-Al-Mamun said there are plans to establish international offices at every university to develop Bangladesh into a higher education hub, as announced in the government’s election manifesto.

He said a 'Study in Bangladesh' portal is also being planned. Initially, 20 universities will be prioritised, and the portal will provide information on international cooperation, accommodation, scholarships and international offices.

He further said third-language education is a major priority of the government. To expand employment and higher education opportunities at home and abroad, students need to develop not only language skills but also technical and technological skills.

BAU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Rafiqul Islam Sarder said the university has already established the 'International Language Center BAU'. Through this language centre, BAU has decided to provide training in German, Chinese and Japanese.
