Smart ultrasonic solution offers new hope to reduce post-harvest paddy losses

Agrilife24.com:A promising step towards modernizing post-harvest management in Bangladesh was highlighted at a seminar titled “A Strategic Pathway to Transform Post-Harvest Management: A Market-Ready Smart Ultrasonic Solution for Reducing Stored Paddy Losses and Achieving SDG 2 and 12”, held at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) at Farmgate on April 19, 2026. The event was organized by the Bangladesh Agricultural University Research and Innovation Center (BAU-RIC).

Guest of honour Md. Salim Khan, Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, highlighted that post-harvest losses remain a critical challenge for farmers, and innovative solutions like ultrasonic technology could significantly reduce these losses.

Md. Anwar Uddin, Additional Secretary of the ICT Division, stressed the role of digital innovation in scaling such technologies across the country.

Special guest Suparna Roy from the World Bank underscored the need for practical, market-ready solutions that can be adopted at the grassroots level. Dr. Md. Abdus Salam, Executive Chairman of BARC, called for stronger collaboration between researchers, policymakers and the private sector. Subrata Ranjan Das, MD of ACI Motors Limited expressed interest in supporting commercialization efforts.

Delivering the keynote, Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Awal, Bangladesh Agricultural University, explained how the smart ultrasonic system works to protect stored paddy from pests without harmful chemicals, making it both effective and environmentally friendly. The promotional workshop was commenced with a welcome speech by Faruque Ahmed Jewel, Component Lead, EDGE project, ICT Division.

Chairing the session, Prof. Dr. K.M. Mostafizur Rahman remarked in his concluding speech that such innovations align well with national priorities and global development goals, urging stakeholders to move swiftly towards adoption.
