Inauguration of Consultation Meeting and Review Workshop with Agricultural Scientists at BARI

Agrilife24.com:A consultation meeting on the activities of various agricultural institutions, including the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI), Gazipur Agricultural University (GAU), National Agricultural Training Academy (NATA), and Seed Certification Agency (SCA), along with the inauguration of the BARI Internal Research Review and Program Planning Workshop–2026, held today, 28 July 2026 (13 Shraban 1433 Bangla), at 10:00 a.m. at the Kazi Badruddoza Auditorium.

The workshop was organized with the objective of evaluating the research programs implemented during the fiscal year 2025–2026 and formulating research programs for 2026–2027 based on the experiences and outcomes of those activities. BARI scientists have developed a total of 1,373 technologies, including 681 high-yielding varieties (including hybrids), disease-resistant and stress-tolerant crop varieties suitable for cultivation under diverse adverse environmental conditions, as well as 692 other production technologies. These innovations have significantly increased the production of oilseed crops, pulses, potatoes, vegetables, spices, and fruits in the country. The primary objective of the workshop is to assess the effectiveness of these technologies and identify research priorities for developing new technologies in line with the country's current agricultural needs.

The consultation and inaugural session was chaired by Dr. Rafiqul I Mohamed, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture. The chief guest was Mr. Mohammed Aminur Rashid, Hon’ble Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries & Livestock, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. In his address, the Hon’ble Minister emphasized that agricultural research activities must be advanced in response to emerging challenges and future demands. He also stressed the importance of developing climate-resilient crop varieties and technologies capable of adapting to adverse environmental conditions.

The Director General of BARI, Dr. Md. Monjurul Kadir, delivered the welcome address. During the inaugural session, Dr. Faruk Ahmed, Director (Research), BARI, presented the keynote paper highlighting BARI’s research activities and achievements. At the workshop, presentations on institutional activities were delivered by Professor Dr. G.K.M. Mustafizur Rahman, Vice-Chancellor, Gazipur Agricultural University; Dr. Md. Rafiqul Islam, Director General, Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI); Mr. Saiful Azam Khan, Director General, National Agricultural Training Academy (NATA); and Dr. Md. Saiful Alam, Director, Seed Certification Agency (SCA). Speakers at the consultation and inaugural session called for greater collaboration among all stakeholders to make the country’s agricultural research and development activities more responsive, innovative, and future-oriented.

Dr. Reshma Sultana, Director (Training and Communication), BARI; Dr. Habib Mohammad Naser, Director (Planning and Evaluation); Dr. Nirmal Kumar Dutta, Director, Tuber Crops Research Centre; and Dr. Kawsar Uddin Ahmad, Director, Horticulture Research Centre. Senior officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), various organizations under the National Agricultural Research System (NARS), and other agriculture-related institutions, as well as scientists and officers from different divisions of BARI, participated in the workshop. At the conclusion of the program, Dr. Md. Mosharraf Hossain Molla, Director (Service and Supply), BARI, expressed his gratitude to all participants for their enthusiastic participation and valuable contributions to the workshop.
