Mohammad Riaz, BAU:Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) has been ranked the top institution in Bangladesh in the Veterinary Science category in the SCImago Institutions Rankings 2026, published by the Spain-based ranking organization.
The university also secured 92nd position among 251 institutions in Asia and 432nd globally in the discipline.
The information was disclosed by Professor Dr. Md. Bahanur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at BAU, during a press conference held at the faculty’s Dean Conference Hall on Sunday (June 7).
Speaking at the press conference, Professor Dr. Bahanur Rahman said, “SCImago is a Spain-based ranking organization that publishes rankings of educational and research institutions, countries and scientific publications. This year, a total of 10,827 institutions were included in the rankings, of which 5,491 are universities. In the Veterinary Science category, 978 institutions were ranked from among 1,306 eligible universities worldwide. Among Bangladeshi institutions, the Faculty of Veterinary Science of Bangladesh Agricultural University secured the top position. We ranked 92nd among 251 institutions in Asia and 432nd among the 978 institutions worldwide.”
He further noted that among Bangladeshi universities in the Veterinary Science category, Sylhet Agricultural University ranked second with a global position of 593rd, followed by Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University in third place (1,104th), Gazipur Agricultural University in fourth place (1,162nd), and Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University in fifth place (1,285th).
Regarding efforts to maintain and improve the university’s national and international standing, Professor Rahman said, “This achievement is a matter of pride for the entire university. It is the result of the collective efforts of our teachers, researchers, students, officers and staff. We will continue striving to sustain this momentum through quality education and internationally recognized research.”
“To support this goal, we have formed a 15-member ranking cell comprising faculty members from all departments of the Veterinary Science Faculty. The cell will oversee and coordinate all ranking-related activities,” he added.
Professor Dr. K.H.M. Nazmul Hussain Nazir, Head of the Department of Microbiology and Hygiene, also addressed the press conference. He explained that the Veterinary Science rankings are primarily based on three indicators: research performance, technological innovation and societal impact.
“Only research articles published in Scopus-indexed journals are considered in the ranking process. One of our major limitations is the high cost associated with scientific publication. Although the Bangladesh Agricultural University Research System provides some financial support, it remains insufficient compared to actual needs,” he said.
He further emphasized the need for greater government investment in research. “Government funding for research is currently very limited. Increased allocations would allow students to become actively involved in research from the undergraduate level, which would further strengthen our position in global rankings,” he added. This version follows the style and language typically used in a daily English newspaper.
