BAU Correspondent:A workshop titled `Marine Geo-Hazards and Modern Observation Technologies in Bangladesh' was held at the Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), focusing on coastal risks, marine hazards, and the application of advanced monitoring technologies.
The event was jointly organized by the Institute of Environmental Science and Disaster Management at Bangladesh Agricultural University and China’s First Institute of Oceanography.
The workshop took place on Wednesday at the Faculty of Agriculture conference room, bringing together faculty members, students, and researchers from various departments.
Dr. G M Mujibur Rahman attended the program as chief guest. Special guest Dr. Md Shahidul Haque highlighted the importance of international collaboration in addressing Bangladesh’s growing environmental and marine risks.
The keynote presentations were delivered by experts from China’s First Institute of Oceanography, including Dr. Jin Shan, Dr. Yonggui Yu, and scientist Dr. Shumin Jiang.
The program was chaired by the director of the Institute of Environmental Science and Disaster Management at Bangladesh Agricultural University, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Baten. It was moderated by Professor Dr. Md. Badiuzzaman Khan along with Dr. Jin Shan. Participants from different faculties of the university were present.
In his presentation, Dr. Jin Shan emphasized that Bangladesh’s geographical setting dominated by river systems and floodplains makes it highly vulnerable to natural disasters such as floods, cyclones, earthquakes, and potential tsunami risks. He noted that the country’s geological structure is the result of long-term tectonic evolution linked to the Himalayan orogeny. He also stressed that advanced monitoring systems, scientific research, and international cooperation are essential for effective disaster risk reduction.
Dr. Md Shahidul Haque stated that international research on Bangladesh’s climate and marine hazards remains limited, while China’s engagement in studying local challenges is commendable. He stressed expanding joint research, technology exchange, and academic cooperation between Bangladesh and China to strengthen disaster management and sustainable development.
Chief guest Dr. G M Mujibur Rahman underscored the importance of technology-driven research and global collaboration in tackling climate change and natural disasters, noting that such initiatives significantly enhance national capacity in disaster preparedness and resilience.
