Japan Delica Co. is set to launch scallop processing in Bangladesh

Agrilife24.com: Japan Delica Co., an importer and processor of seafood, is set to launch a new business in Bangladesh this October to process Japanese scallops for export to Europe, the United States, and other international markets, according to a report by The Japan News.

The company, based in Nishinomiya, Hyogo Prefecture, and a subsidiary of Japan Food Service Co., has acquired a seafood processing plant in Cox’s Bazar, located in southeastern Bangladesh. This is the first time for a company to try export Japanese scallops including from Hokkaido and Aomori Prefecture to Bangladesh and process them locally. The plant will begin operations in October with 500 employees.

Japan Delica has been operating a crab processing plant in Bangladesh since 2018 and has acquired a new seafood processing plant in Cox’s Bazar, in the country’s southeast.

The company aims to achieve annual sales of ¥8 billion in three years. Up to 1,000 tons of scallops will be shelled per month, and about 200 tons of scallop meat will be exported to Europe, the United States, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore.

Japan Delica’s decision to expand into Bangladesh represents the first instance of a company exporting Japanese scallops, including those sourced from Hokkaido and Aomori Prefecture, for local processing in Bangladesh.
