“Right to Protein” Seminar in Dhaka Highlights Poultry Industry’s Role in Nutrition Awareness

Staff Correspondent: A seminar titled “Right to Protein” was held on Sunday (17 August) at the Regency Hotel, Nikunja, Dhaka, to raise awareness about nutrition and the importance of protein in daily diets. The event, jointly organized by the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) and the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC). The event drew significant attention from participants including nutritionists, doctors, academics, university students, media representatives, poultry farmers, and industry stakeholders.

The seminar began with a welcome address by Mr. Moshiur Rahman, President, WPSA-BB. In her online remarks, Ms. Deeba Giannoulis, Regional Head of Corporate Affairs, South Asia & Sub-Sahara Africa (SAASSA), U.S. Soybean highlighted the importance of sustainable protein sources in ensuring global food and nutrition security.

Prominent experts joined as panel speakers, including:

  • Ms. Tamanna Chowdhury, Principal Dietitian, Evercare Hospital
  • Dr. Khaleda Islam, Professor, Institute of Nutrition and Food Sciences, University of Dhaka
  • Dr. AZM Ahsan Ullah, Consultant-Cardiology, Prava Health Hospital
  • Mr. Md. Kamruzzaman, Superintendent, Primary Teacher’s Training Institute, Dhaka

In their discussions, speakers emphasized that nutritious food is essential for healthy growth, productivity, and an active life. While Bangladesh has made progress in nutrition indicators due to government initiatives, experts stressed that challenges remain in meeting future nutritional needs, particularly with a growing population and declining agricultural land.

Speakers further underlined that the poultry industry plays a vital role in ensuring affordable and safe protein for the population, contributing significantly to poverty alleviation and economic development. Initiatives such as this seminar, they noted, can play a key role in raising public awareness about balanced nutrition.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Shamsul Arefin Khaled, President, BPICC, who expressed optimism about the poultry industry’s contribution to national nutrition goals. The event was conducted by Dr. Biplab Kumar Pramanik, General Secretary, WPSA-BB. A.T.M. Mostafa Kamal, Secretary, BPICC, was also present at the occasion.
