Collective Efforts Needed to Ensure Safe Food and Sustainable Agriculture

Agrilife News Desk: With the theme “Hand in Hand Towards Better Food and a Brighter Future,” World Food Day 2025 was celebrated in Singair Upazila of Manikganj under the Green Evolution Project implemented by WAVE Foundation. On this occasion, a discussion meeting was held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the hall room of Singair Pilot Girls’ High School.

The event was graced by Dr. Sajedul Islam, Upazila Livestock Officer, as the chief guest, and Md. Abu Hena Mostafa Kamal, Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer, as the special guest. The discussion was presided over by Jagadish Chandra Malo, Adviser Member of Singair Upazila Lokmorcha. Among others present were Md. Anwar Hossain, Assistant Head Teacher of Singair Pilot High School; Ilias Hossain, Member of Joymontop Union Parishad; and farmer representative Md. Monir Hossain.

Speakers at the event noted that Bangladesh once faced a severe food crisis, but that situation has changed over time. However, concerns remain about the quality and safety of the food being produced. While the excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides has increased yields, it has also made food unsafe and harmful to health. As a result, many people are suffering from various chronic diseases at a young age. Therefore, it is time to think seriously about food safety. Ensuring a safe food system is not the responsibility of any single institution—it requires the combined efforts of both government and non-government actors.

In his speech, Chief Guest Dr. Sajedul Islam said, “World Food Day is a highly significant occasion. Even today, millions of people around the world go hungry every day. The true success of this day will come only when no one, anywhere in the world, dies from hunger.”

To mark the day, the Green Evolution Project of WAVE Foundation also organized an essay competition among students of Singair Pilot High School on the topic “Together We Build Safe Food and a Sustainable Future.” At the end of the event, prizes were awarded to the three winning students by the distinguished guests.
